Health and Safety

ILLNESS/INJURY

Children may become ill or get injured at school.  Whenever this happens, the school will contact the parent/contact person as directed by the Emergency Care Card. Every student must have an Emergency Care Card on file with phone numbers of who should be contacted in cases of emergencies.  Your child will be released only to those individuals listed on their Emergency Card; therefore, it is very important that parents update this information throughout the year. Parents may update this information through ParentVUE. Please note per regulation, students who are ill will be sent home.

Our clinic works to control and manage student exposure to contagious diseases.  We will call you if your student exhibits symptoms of illness, such as: fever over 100 degrees, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, unexplained rash, diarrhea, head lice, inflamed eyes with discharge, persistent cough. We ask that you make arrangements to pick up your student as soon as possible.

Remember: To limit the spread of illnesses, notify the school office if your child gets the flu, head lice, strep throat, chicken pox, or other contagious illnesses, and keep him/her at home.

WHEN TO STAY HOME

Students with symptoms, such as a fever of 100◦F or over, severe coughing or difficulty breathing, cold/ flu, pink eye, ring worm, rashes, sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea should stay at home. Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, pink eye, and rashes should stay home until a doctor evaluates their symptoms and determines whether or not they are contagious.  The Prince William County Department of Health recommends that students remain home fever-free, vomit-free and diarrhea-free for 24 hours after an illness before returning to school.

MEDICATION AND HEALTH TREATMENT PLANS

Health treatment plans should be completed by the student's physician and delivered to the nurse at the start of each school year. Every effort should be made by the parent for the student to receive needed medication outside of the school day.  No child is allowed to transport any medicine to or from school.  Students are not allowed to keep any medication in their possession while at school. If your child requires medication at school, an adult needs to bring the medication to the clinic unopened, in its original container with prescription label intact (when applicable) and unexpired. Parents must also complete a Medical Authorization Form before medication will be administered. You may contact our school nurse, Mrs. Jones, with any questions.
