Code of Behavior

KILBY CODE OF BEHAVIOR

In order to guarantee all students in our school the excellent educational climate they deserve, no student will be allowed to prevent a teacher from teaching or classmates from learning. Students will not be allowed to engage in any behavior that is not in his/her best interest or in the best interest of others. Prince William County Public Schools has defined the rights and responsibilities of students in The Code of Behavior.

All parents should review the PWC Code of Behavior. At Kilby, we follow the PWC Code of Behavior and we strive to keep parents well informed. Our communication for informing parents between the teacher and parent is the R.O.A.R. Behavior Communicator. These documents outline the basic rules of conduct and disciplinary procedures for Kilby students.

It is the responsibility of the parent and student to review the Code of Behavior. Make sure you and your children understand the expectations, rules and regulations, policies, and procedures it contains. Use these "rules of the road" to navigate opportunities and challenges in PWCS, while protecting the health, safety, and rights of PWCS students and staff, and the quality of our learning environment.

SCHOOLWIDE EXPECTATIONS

Schoolwide expectations are centered on respect and accepting responsibility. We want Kilby students to R.O.A.R. (Respect Others and Accept Responsibility). Respect involves treating everyone—peers, teachers, and staff—with kindness, consideration, and understanding, recognizing the value and dignity of each individual. It also means taking care of school property and the shared spaces we all use. Accepting responsibility entails being accountable for one’s actions, striving for personal excellence, and meeting academic and behavioral standards. This includes completing assignments on time, adhering to school rules, and acknowledging and learning from mistakes.

This year we are implementing a House System. A House System is a behavior strategy where students and all staff members are divided into teams called Houses. The students within each House works together to earn points, support each other, and compete against other Houses. Our House Teams are as follows:

  • Green- Ambitious Alligators
  • Red- Belonging Bears
  • Yellow- Collaboration Canaries
  • Blue- Development Dolphins

Students are rewarded with points through class DOJO set up by the classroom teacher. Student points are as follows:

  • 1 point for appropriate behavior
  • 1 point for class tiger paw from Encore
  • 2 points for appropriate behavior in the hallway.
  • 3 points for appropriate behavior in the cafeteria
  • 3 points for Super Staff
  • 5 points for parent volunteers or participation in school events
  • 5 points for perfect monthly attendance

Teachers can also reward extra points based on their discretion. Points are also rewarded for parents who volunteer, participate in school wide events, etc.

Each quarter the House with the most points will be celebrated with a reasonable activity decided by the winning House. All students will be able to participate in schoolwide behavior and attendance incentives.
